Rijnsburger ui
The nickname for Rijnsburgers is 'onion'. In the twentieth century, there was a cannery in rijnsburg where cauliflowers, strawberries, apples and pearl onions were canned, among other things. It was also called the onion factory. Tradition has it that the smell in surroundings was not always pleasant Many think the nickname Onions originated from this. However, the nickname has a different origin. Traditionally, many flowers have been grown in Rijnsburg, including tulips. If the same flowers were grown on the same soil for too long, the result was so-called bad soil; soil on which little grew. To ensure that the soil became 'clean' again, onions were grown on it. The seeds were saved for the next time. There is still an onion variety today that bears the name Rijnsburger. It was developed by Rijnsburgers in the 20th century. Development or breeding was done by feel, taking into account climatic conditions such as daylight length. Both growing and processing were done by Rijnsburg companies and proved very lucrative.
There is also an
alternative history of Rijnsburg. In this parody the word 'onionism' is coined.
