Zwiebelmarkt und Lichterfest
This book is about various German traditions, including the 'Zwiebelmarkt' (Onion Market).
There are a few nice pictures and a little drawing depicting onions.
"In GDR times, up to 120,000 visitors from all parts of the republic came to the city - although the festival had been shortened to one day. 32,000 onion panicles were sold in 1970, for example - 100 tonnes of peel real oynoun Sometimes the coveted panicles were sold out early in the morning. Renaming the onion market the "Socialist Harvest Festival" was just as unsuccessful at the time as stopping unplanned performances by musicians in the streets."
