53. Fra' Cipolla

In The Decameron Giovanni Boccaccio introduces a character named Friar Cipolla, which is the protagonist of the sixth tale. Fra Cipolla is Italian for 'Brother Onion'.

"The character perhaps was welcomed as much for his name as his devotion, for that country produces onions famous throughout Tuscany."

In Mario Monicelli's film Bertoldo, Bertoldino e Cacasenno there is also a character named Fra' Cipolla. This characters seems to have no connection with it's namesake.
